A Warrant Officer Class II in the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested in the Ashanti Region for allegedly attempting to sell high-powered firearms and ammunition to civilians.
The suspect, identified as W.O. II David Kofi Brew of the 4th Battalion in Kumasi, was apprehended on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, around 2:30 pm at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), led by Regional Director Assistant Superintendent of Police Princeton Peasah Darkwa.
According to police reports, the operation aimed to disrupt networks supplying weapons to criminal elements in Obuasi and surrounding communities.
Undercover operatives engaged the suspect on December 15, 2025, when he reportedly arrived in a military vehicle (registration number 54 GA 92) and offered to supply weapons such as M16 rifles, G3 rifles, and pistols, quoting GH¢80,000 for an M16.
The following day, after the suspect allegedly confirmed the firearms were ready, he was arrested while attempting to hand them over.
Items recovered included a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.
During interrogation, the officer reportedly admitted to selling firearms to individuals in Obuasi and nearby areas.
He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the Ghana Armed Forces is being formally notified.
Police say efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend other accomplices in the alleged arms trafficking network.
