Police have intercepted a bus carrying over 1,000 rounds of ammunition destined for Tamale, in a significant bust at the Asankare barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The incident involved a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21, which was en route from Accra to Tamale via Savulegu, with 45 passengers on board.
According to a police situational report (SITREP) obtained by Graphic Online, the vehicle was stopped during a routine check at the barrier. Officers grew suspicious that the driver might be transporting illicit items and promptly alerted the Divisional Commander.
The commander arrived at the scene alongside the Juaso District Commander and the Juaso District Crime Officer, leading to a thorough search of the bus.
During the inspection, authorities discovered a sack containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition.
The driver, identified as 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, along with his 22-year-old assistant, Mohammed Jabir, were taken into custody.
When questioned, Gzali claimed that the sack and its contents were delivered to the station by an unknown individual as a parcel intended for one Oboye in Tamale.
“The bus was immediately impounded, and the ammunition was retained as exhibits. The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations,” the SITREP stated.
This interception highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the smuggling of arms and ammunition, particularly to northern regions, amid concerns over security and potential conflicts.
