The Ministry of Energy has revealed that police officers involved in the assault on its staff members allegedly justified their actions by claiming they were insulted for reckless driving, a reason the Ministry has strongly condemned as indefensible.
In a statement issued by Spokesperson Richmond Rockson, the Ministry detailed the incident that took place on Thursday, January 15, 2026, when staff were commuting to work in an official bus.
The perpetrators, confirmed to be personnel from the Ghana Police Service rather than National Security operatives as initially speculated, reportedly subjected the victims to brutal treatment.
According to the spokesperson, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to initiate a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the matter.
The statement emphasized that no citizen should endure such abuse, especially from law enforcement officers tasked with protecting lives and maintaining order.
“The alleged justification for this assault, that staff of the Ministry ‘insulted’ the officers for reckless driving, is wholly indefensible and cannot, under any circumstances, warrant violence or abuse of power,” the statement read.
The Ministry has urged the Ghana Police Service to respond promptly, ensuring accountability for the officers involved, justice for the affected staff, and measures to rebuild public trust in the Service’s professionalism.
Backround
The1957News received exclusive footage showing some alleged National Security officers assaulting staff of the Ministry of Energy.
The incident is said to have occurred at Kasoa Amanfrom on the morning of Thursday, January 15, 2026.
According to an eyewitness account, some staff of the Energy Ministry, while traveling from Kasoa to the office on board an official bus, came across a pickup truck parked very close to the middle of the road, making it difficult for the Ministry’s staff bus to exit into the main road. Upon the bus exiting into the main road, a staff member on board the bus informed the driver of the pickup that he had parked wrongly. When the bus moved, the pickup allegedly followed and crossed the Ministry’s bus at top speed. The driver of the bus maneuvered but was crossed a second time. The video from the incident shows the occupants of the pickup truck, who have now been confirmed to be police officers, attacking some members of the Ministry through the window of the bus.
They are then seen forcing their way onto the bus and assaulting occupants of the bus.
According to a source at the Energy Ministry, the attackers, after assaulting three persons on the bus, including the driver, dragged one staff member off the bus and took him to an unknown location.
