A policewoman, Gifty Oppong, has been remanded into custody by the Adabraka District Court after appearing before it charged with the murder of a taxi driver at Tetegu near Weija.
Oppong is accused of shooting and killing Edward Awuku Owusu, popularly known as Papa Kwesi, during a confrontation on January 19, 2026.
The court, presided over by the judge, did not take the accused’s plea and ordered her remanded into lawful custody to reappear on February 25, 2026.
Counsel for the accused, Mr Raymond Felli, prayed the court to grant his client bail, but the application was not granted at the sitting.
The prosecution was led by Chief Inspector Josephine Asondek.
In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service said it is conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting incident that occurred around the Tetegu area near Weija.
According to preliminary findings, the victim was shot and immediately rushed to the Police Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The statement added that the policewoman sustained injuries to her head and both legs after she was knocked down by a vehicle while attempting to flee the scene. She was also taken to hospital for treatment.
Items recovered from the scene as exhibits included one live 9mm round, a magazine, and one spent 9mm cartridge.
The Police Service has assured the public that the matter is being handled professionally and that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
