President John Dramani Mahama has underscored that prayer and faith alone cannot drive Ghana’s economic transformation, stressing the need for hard work, discipline, and responsibility to complement spiritual efforts.
Speaking at the 2026 National Day of Prayer held in Accra on Wednesday, President Mahama told gathered political leaders, clergy, traditional authorities, and citizens that sustainable national development requires both faith and purposeful action.
“Prayer without responsibility cannot transform an economy. Hope without discipline cannot create prosperity,” the President said.
He urged all Ghanaians to embrace a strong work ethic and actively contribute to nation-building, noting that every citizen has a role to play in realising the country’s aspirations for growth.
Drawing from the Bible, President Mahama emphasised the importance of combining faith with practical effort.
“Our national journey reminds us of an enduring truth, ‘faith without works is dead,’ says James 2:26,” he quoted.
The President referenced the story of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and Joseph preparing Egypt for famine, highlighting how God’s people historically paired prayer with diligent labour and wise planning.
The National Day of Prayer brought together various stakeholders to seek divine intervention for peace, unity, and the continued progress of the nation.
