A student of the Institute of Journalism of the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC) has tragically died after being knocked down by an unregistered vehicle on the N1 Highway.
According to reports available to The1957News, the suspect driver allegedly abandoned the body of the deceased in the Korle Bu area.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the Dzorwulu traffic light intersection near the Lapaz footbridge, where the student, identified as Nelson, was attempting to cross the road after visiting the campus en route home.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the driver initially feigned concern and expressed an intention to assist, but later fled the scene, leaving Nelson’s body to be discovered by a police patrol team around Korle Bu.
In an official communication issued on January 22, 2026, the institution’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Executive-Elect expressed deep sorrow over the death.
“It is with deep concern and sorrow that we address you regarding the tragic incident involving one of our fellow students who was knocked down on the 335 Highway,” the statement read.
The SRC assured students that the university administration, under the Dean of Students, has taken personal charge of the situation with utmost urgency.
According to the SRC, a high-level meeting involving university management, security officials, student leadership, and representatives of the “Justice for Nelson” initiative was held to establish verified facts.
The SRC urged the student body to remain calm, maintain peace during this critical period, and exercise restraint and compassion in public commentary as the family grieves.
“While we fully recognize the gravity of this situation and your right to express concern, we appeal to all students to remain calm and maintain peace during this critical period,” the statement emphasized.
In response to the incident, the incoming SRC has pledged to intensify student safety sensitization efforts, particularly on road safety along the N1 Highway. Students are advised to exercise extreme caution when using or crossing the highway and to utilize designated crossing points where available.
Following the construction of a new campus on the Dzorwulu stretch of the N1, students of UniMAC’s Institute of Journalism (formerly Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ)) have on various occasions expressed concerns over the lack of a footbridge to help students and members of the university community cross the very busy national highway easily.
