Amid ongoing protests by Zoomlion workers over meagre earnings and delayed payment, the Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has defended the payment of GHS 258 to sanitation workers, describing it as a sufficient allowance for their role in maintaining cleanliness across the country.
Dr. Agyepong made these remarks on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, during a tour conducted at the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources. He argued that the payment does not breach Ghana’s Labour Act or minimum wage regulations.
“The hours they work is three hours – maximum four hours then you are done. So when you equate it to minimum wage of 258 for three hours. It is three hours and it is allowance, it’s not a salary,” he clarified.
He explained that the amount is based on a contract provided by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), which determines the earnings of all operatives and mandates Zoomlion to assign and manage them accordingly.
Dr. Agyepong further disclosed that, in addition to the allowance, Zoomlion provides health insurance and other support packages for its workers.
He revealed that discussions with YEA to review and potentially increase the workers’ earnings are ongoing, expressing hope for a favorable outcome.
