UG: About 18 students arrested for protesting against hall accommodation.

Some personnel of the Ghana Police Service, on Tuesday, February 14, arrested about eighteen (18) students from the University of Ghana, Legon for their involvement in a disturbance on the campus accommodation.

In a statement shared, the Police observed that the 18 suspects in their custody were together with about 200 others believed to be former members of the University’s Commonwealth hall.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the 18 suspects currently in their custody will be put before the court to face justice.

“We would like to give the assurance that all other persons involved in the disturbances will be arrested and brought to face justice”.

The 18 suspects, were among the aggrieved students who were protesting against the institution’s management’s silence on their accommodation crisis but then clashed with the Police right at the forecourt of the University’s Commonwealth hall.

In the process of their protest, some of the former students who were residents of that hall touched particularly on the management’s silence on Hall’s accommodation crisis. Again, it was noted that this was after the court placed an injunction on the implementation of the residential policy.

Although the disturbed students filed for an injunction to favor the continuing students who reside at the Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls respectively, they remained sacked.

Adequate measures and security have been put into action to effectively calm further crisis and ensure academic activities resume immediately without any interferences, the Police assured.
